Overview

Burr and Burton Academy believes that the arts are an integral part of every student's education. Our personal, social, economic and cultural environments are shaped by the arts at every turn. The arts speak to our students' creative spirits, allowing them to be both creators and appreciators. A study of the arts allows students to frame the world from an aesthetic perspective. When creating art or performing, students are given the opportunity to express their ideas about themselves and others. When students reflect on what matters to them, their self esteem is enhanced. When students see their peers expressing important concerns through their art works, they develop empathy. When ideas and values are shared, a sense of community is fostered. The multicultural/transcultural aspects of the arts afford appreciation and acceptance of diversity. Furthermore, a study of the arts helps students to think and work across traditional disciplines and realize that problems can have multiple solutions.

For this reason, the school requires every student to take a full credit course in one of the art disciplines for graduation. Whenever possible, the arts are also integrated into humanities classes with special visiting artist performances and exhibits and through interdisciplinary projects.

The department believes that lessons should be taught sequentially so that ideas and skills build on one another. Assessment in the arts is responsive to expanded notions of intelligence and creativity. Assessment focuses on both products and processes while being student oriented and teacher directed.

Mission

The Burr and Burton Academy Arts Department provides opportunities for cultural literacy in the major disciplines of dance, music, theater, and the visual arts. It is the mission of the department to provide an education that prepares our students to be skilled art makers and performers as well as to develop members of an informed audience of the arts.

Goals

The goals of the Burr and Burton Arts Department are adopted from the National Standards for Arts Education.

1. Students will communicate proficiency in at least one form, including the ability to use basic vocabularies, materials, tools, techniques, and intellectual methods.

2. Students will develop and present basic analyses of works of art from structural, historical, and cultural perspectives and from combinations of those perspectives. This includes the ability to understand and evaluate work in various arts disciplines

3. Students will have an informed acquaintance with exemplary works of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods, and a basic understanding of historical developments in the arts disciplines across the arts as a whole and within cultures.

4. Students will relate, connect and compare various types of art knowledge and skills within and across disciplines. This includes mixing and matching competencies and understandings in art making, history, and culture, and analysis in any arts-related project or performance.
