Overview

Literacy means knowledge and knowledge puts one at a distinct advantage. We live in a time when the fundamentals, principles, and concepts of science enter into, and affect, every facet of our lives. What one knows about science can be advantageous in everyday life to both students and adults. Current developments and the rate of development in science / technology only serve to widen the gap between the scientifically literate and illiterate … thereby increasing the distance between the advantaged and disadvantaged. As adults, Burr and Burton Academy graduates who are scientifically literate can more fully participate in a world that is increasingly shaped by science and technology.

The Science Department is committed to promoting science literacy. Science literacy is defined as knowledge of certain important scientific facts, concepts, and theories; the exercise of scientific habits of mind; and an understanding of the nature of science, its connection to mathematics and technology, its impact on individuals, and its role in society. Armed with scientific literacy, Burr and Burton Academy graduates will be informed decision-makers on an individual, local, and global scale. They will be more apt to ride the wave of scientific and technological innovations.

Therefore, the Science Department aims to design and deliver a science curriculum that promotes science literacy to all students, regardless of academic ability, incorporating teaching techniques and strategies that meet the needs of each and every one of our students.
