Living in Vermont

stowe

Our international students have the opportunity to learn how to ski or snowboard or to continue perfecting their slope-side skills. The program includes equipment rental for the season and a ski pass for one of our local mountains. Every Friday afternoon during the winter the students go to nearby Bromley Mountain for a half-day of skiing or snowboarding. If they are experienced, they can also join the school’s snowboarding or Alpine or Nordic ski teams, which requires them to practice every day after school.

The name of our state comes from the French for green mountain. When the mountains are not green, they are white with snow and winter sports are abundant.

Vermont is well known as a safe place to live. Our small-town life and rural environment offer an experience of America that is traditional and quiet. But we are close enought to major metropolitan areas to easily visit the great art museums and other cultural sites of American life. We travel to New York City and Washington, D.C. We take short trips to neighboring states, go hiking, shopping, and bowling.

Dormitory Life
Burr and Burton has two comfortable homes with all modern conveniences dedicated to our international students. Both are within walking distance of the campus. One has accommodations for 7-8 male students and the other houses 3-4 female students. Our international students quickly feel right at home.

The dorm houses are safe, attractive, and clean. Host parents live in the dorm 24 hours a day for supervision and support. They are happy to take students to the store or to the doctor if necessary. They will also help cook their favorite foods, and provide a warm environment for get-togethers with other students. They are there to help all the international students have a happy, safe, and successful school experience.

Dorm life gives our international students plenty of opportunities to practice English with their new friends. Whether they are studying together, playing tennis or soccer, or just relaxing, they'll be sharing and learning a new language.

Host Families
Most people learned their native language through their family life and living with a host family in Vermont while attending Burr and Burton is a great way to immerse students in the English language. A host family will help an international student to learn English the same way. In a in a warm and caring environment, students will learn English naturally. Living with a host family also gives students a chance to be immersed in American culture every day. They are not simply learning the English language and customs in the classroom, but in their daily activities.

Our host families are carefully chosen and we make every attempt to match our international students’ interests with our host families’. All host families are friendly and eager to share their lives with international  students. They are happy to learn about their guest student and their country. Living with a host family means sharing meals, going to the movies, shopping, even joining them for family trips. Many international students and their host families maintain life-long friendships.

Lifelong Friendships

Studying overseas is not only about education in the classroom; it is also about learning from daily experiences. Our international program is completely dedicated to ensuring that our overseas students have many opportunities to have fun and make friends, with each other and with American students.
