Burr and Burton Social Studies Department
Summer Reading Assignment
2008-2009

The BBA Social Studies Department is instituting a summer reading requirement.  We believe that this assignment provides students with the opportunity to read something both of high interest and related to the curriculum. The Social Studies Department chose each selection based on our current curriculum and with student engagement in mind.

Entering grade 9 - all levels of Developing Global Understanding: Perspectives on Culture

Satrapi, Marjane.  Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood.
In graphic novel format, Satrapi tells the story of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.

Assignment: As you read keep track of five passages that you find significant or interesting.  Write the passage (including page #) and then a 3-5 sentence reaction to the passage.  In your reaction you might choose to address:

  • your reason for choosing the passage,
  • questions it raises for you,
  • connections you make to other events and,
  • any emotional response the passage generates in you.

In addition, craft 4-6 questions that you have regarding the book and the subject matter.  We will explore these questions at the start of the course.  All work is due on Tuesday, September 2, 2008

If you are taking Social Studies during the second semester hand in your work to your second semester teacher by the September 2nd due date.

Books for loan are available at the Mark Skinner Library in Manchester.  If you borrow a book it is important that you return it when you have completed the assignment so that it is available for another student.

Books are also available for purchase at the Northshire Bookstore or on Amazon.com for a reasonable price.

If you have questions please e-mail Meg Kenny at mkenny@burrburton.org or phone her at 362-1775 x166.
