Welcome Letter 2020 and Key Information on School Reopening

August 14, 2020

Dear BBA students and families,

It is a sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 2020-2021 academic year. Life on campus will be different this fall, but the necessary health and safety measures are worth the inconvenience, so that we can learn together. BBA’s campus is beautiful, but it is the people that bring it to life. I am confident that with everyone doing their part, our hybrid opening will be a success.

I am excited to meet new students and families and to reconnect with returning students and families over the course of the coming weeks. Our talented and committed faculty and staff are also eager to welcome you all back! Like many of you, some are anxious to return. This fall we are counting on everyone to do their small part to keep the community healthy and school open for in-person learning. Completing daily health screenings and wearing face coverings, along with regular hand hygiene and physical distancing are the new normal. My hope is that after a few weeks, the new normal will just be a part of our culture, and what comes into focus are learning challenges and opportunities, new and renewed connections with peers, and unexpected inspirations that inspire a curiosity to learn, all leading to new accomplishments.

In two weeks we will welcome you back to campus for in-person orientation programs. It has been a long time since you have had the opportunity to gather with peers and teachers and dig into learning on campus. I am grateful to all of my colleagues who continue to work behind the  scenes so that we are ready for a safe and healthy return to engaging and vigorous learning on BBA’s campus.

You are coming into adulthood during an uncertain time in our history. As citizens, your charge will be to lead our communities post-pandemic, after the 2020 election, through economic uncertainty and climate change, and towards the social justice laid out in our constitution but not yet fulfilled in our actions.

I share with you two resources to ground us in the work ahead:

Many of our rising Juniors had the opportunity to read civil rights leader John Lewis' book March and attend a  talk he gave in October 2019.  He left behind a powerful message for today’s youth, published in the New York Times after his death, urging all of us “to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe.”

It is hard work to do what John Lewis asks of us and it is important to remember that we are a campus of people with different stories. We must avoid limited perspective, closed-mindedness, and stereotypes. As the Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie reminds us in her powerful 2009 TED talk, the problem is not with the stereotypes themselves, but rather with the fact that “that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story… it is impossible to engage properly with a place or person without engaging with all of the stories of that place and that person.”

We have the opportunity to contribute as the authors of our story. BBA offers its learners the opportunity to prepare—to debate vigorously, to think critically, to connect to your own voice, to foster responsibility to the community, to understand and solve complex problems, and care deeply about each other and the world around us.

In closing, remember that BBA’s faculty and staff are your greatest supporters; they are committed to creating the right learning conditions so that you can succeed. We will listen to you, help you find the right path, make the right choices, and discover your passions and purpose.

Enjoy the final weeks of the summer break,

Meg Kenny
Associate Head of School

Burr and Burton Academy  2020-2021
Key Information -- Opening of School

In just over two weeks we will welcome the class of 2024 to Burr and Burton Academy for Freshmen Orientation, marking the beginning of the 2020-2021 academic year. Please take the time to read through the following information and embedded links for key information regarding the opening of school. Additional information will follow (handbooks and more information on policies and procedures related to COVID-19).

Reopening Plan
Please review the reopening framework so that you are aware of BBA’s in-person/hybrid model and new health and safety protocols. More details will follow in the coming weeks related to the health screening process, lunch ordering system and more. Please also complete the reopening survey (ASAP) located in BBA’s OnCampus portal so that we have accurate information regarding each student’s choice of student learning mode (in-person/hybrid or fully remote). Students who select the remote option will receive a communication with information on a special orientation program.

Orientation and Daily Schedules
Please review the daily schedules for the opening weeks of school (August 31 - September 11) and the block schedule/cohort rotation to start the school year.

BBA’s OnCampus Portal and Burr and Burton’s website are your information and communication hubs.

On the Families Page of BBA’s website you will see our 2020-2012 Academic Calendar, key policies and downloadable forms.

For a smooth start to the school year, students and parents must log in to the portal ASAP to complete the required enrollment forms:
  • Reopening Survey
  • Re-Enrollment Form 2020-2021
  • 2020-2021 Fall Co-Curricular Rules and Info
  • 2020-2021 Responsible Use and iPad Request
  • 2020-2021 Emergency Contact Info and Permission
  • 2020-2021 Health Consent and Medical Form
Once in the portal, please also review student schedules, as some have changed in order to balance class sizes. If you notice an issue (missing block, double booked or wrong course), please contact your school and college counselor to make adjustments prior to the start of the school year.

Logging in for the first time? Use the following instructions. If you need support or have questions regarding OnCampus or the electronic forms, please contact support@burrburton.org.

iPad Distribution
Students will receive an email from support@burrburton.org.  The email will confirm that we have received your form and will have a link to make an appointment to pick up your iPad. If you still have your iPad from last year, you must return it by Wednesday, August 19th so that it can be updated for redistribution. To schedule an appointment to return your iPad please use https://bbasupport.youcanbook.me/.
  • Read HERE for details on iPad distribution.
  • You will need to bring a $50 check with you in order to receive your iPad.
Advisory/Flexblock
At BBA, we believe in fostering learner agency. The schedule includes Flexblock, a time when students advocate for their learning and interests, and develop independence. As part of our health and safety protocols, we are initially limiting student movement during Flexblock; students will remain in their advisory location during the block.

As we start the year, Flexblock opportunities will include time to meet remotely with a teacher, collaborate remotely with other students on projects, complete assignments, see school and college counselors, complete college applications, read, or make up missed quizzes/assignments/class time. Faculty advisors will be actively involved in helping students to make good choices, reflect on their learning, and track their progress. When conditions allow, we will add more flexibility and autonomy into the Flexblock.

Burr and Burton Food Service Program
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind - Real Food For All is the mission of food service at BBA. BBA is committed to a program that provides delicious healthy meals, teaches students about our food system, and expands its use of locally sourced food while developing community. Due to health and safety guidelines, students will pre-order lunch for pick up. Watch for more information prior to the start of school regarding the ordering and payment process. As always, students are welcome to bring lunch from home.

Students will have a 20 minute lunch built into Advisory/Flex and will choose a location to eat lunch (outside on the lawn, under a tent or an indoor location). Spaces will be monitored and set up for physical distancing.

Special Information for incoming Freshman
Freshman orientation is scheduled from 8/31 - 9/2. During the week of August 24th, detailed schedules and communication will be emailed to your Burr and Burton address and posted on BBA’s website. We will follow all new drop off and health screening procedures outlined below. During orientation days, students will participate in welcome and team building activities, learn important safety protocols, meet advisors and Freshmen Mentors (senior leaders who work with freshman advisory groups), attend class rotations to meet teachers, get familiar with the campus, and learn about hybrid learning. Students need to wear a mask to campus and bring their iPad, a notebook and pens/pencils. Lunch is provided during orientation, so there is no need to bring food or money.

Special Information for 10th - 12th Graders
Orientation programs are scheduled as follows:
  • New Transfer Students in grades 10-12: September 1, 2020 from 1 pm - 3:30 pm.
  • Junior Class: September 2nd from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm.
  • Senior Class: September 3rd from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with optional workshops in the afternoon.
  • Sophomore Class: September 4th from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm.
Detailed schedules for each orientation program will be emailed to students' Burr and Burton email addresses and posted on BBA’s webpage. Student drivers should park in the Senior Lot behind the Riley Center (11th and 12th graders). Please follow all new drop off and health screening procedures outlined below.

Arrival/Drop Off Procedures:
At the start of every year, drop off can be challenging until we work the kinks out. This year we have campus construction and health screenings to add to the mix. Patience as we start is paramount so that we keep everyone safe. Once we determine our staggered approach to drop off, we will share the details on arrival times (buses, drop-off, student drivers). During orientation we will not have a staggered drop off schedule. We will start with the staggered approach on September 8th -- details to follow in the forthcoming handbook.

Buses will drop off in the newly configured driveway between the Riley Center and the Business Office. Cars will not be able to drive into the driveway when students are unloading.

Student drop-off will take place in the lower circle. Please follow the directions of those directing traffic.

Student parking will be in the Senior lot off Seminary Ave, the Junior lot off West Union, and on the field side of Seminary Avenue. All Sophomore drivers will park in the Junior lot. At this point, the Sophomore lot is for construction vehicles only. All students must register their vehicles to receive a parking pass. The registration form will be sent to student email addresses and posted on BBA’s webpage.

Health Screening
All students and families will receive detailed information on health screening procedures via email. Students will receive a reminder each day to screen at home, including a temperature check. When students arrive on campus, they will present the individual QR code they received upon completion of the screening. BBA personnel will then take the student’s temperature. If a student arrives without a QR code, they will complete the process before entering campus. Please screen at home so the arrival process runs more smoothly. Temperature checks will happen at point of arrival.

Student Zoom Session Q&A: August 20th 4 pm
This session is for students so that we can clarify protocols and answer students’ questions. A Zoom link will be sent to students’ BBA email addresses and posted on the BBA website.

Parent Zoom Q&A Sessions on logistics: August 25th 8 am and 6 pm
This final round of parent Zoom meetings will focus on key logistics: drop off, health screening, lunch and any unanswered questions. Watch your email for meeting registration and Zoom links.
