Don’t Miss Art from Schools at SVAC

Georgia Lord '18

It's spring, and the annual Art from Schools exhibit at the Southern Vermont Arts Center (SVAC) is back, featuring artwork from more than 80 Burr and Burton students. From March 20th to April 22nd, art from the digital photography, studio art, ceramics, woodworking, and ACCESS classes will fill SVAC's Wilson Museum.

"[The exhibit] looks beautiful this year, and that's a huge triumph given the fact that in some situations, we were seeing students in the studio one day a week. With all of the stresses of life this year, it has been a big achievement that we can not only work through various ideas but also produce work to meet or express those ideas," said Visual Arts and Design teacher Travis Kline.

Through a BBA grant, every student in a studio art course was given a take-home art kit. This allowed students to engage with classwork at home regardless of access to supplies .

Burr and Burton senior Bryn Adams has two oil paintings in the exhibit, one of them pictured here. This portrait of her mother is a part of an ongoing series she's creating that explores her questions surrounding the American dream and the effects of suburbia on the physical and social environment around it.

"It's exciting to have the work I created in a space where the audience is bigger than just the high school community," said Adams. "Having the opportunity to display art at the Southern Vermont Art Center gives me a chance to show my passion for art to a bigger audience in a setting alongside well-known artists. When SVAC makes an effort to give us the space to express ourselves, it feels like they care and believe that students' art is just as valuable."
