The New Works Project is coming right up! Friday the 27th from 6:30 to 9:00PM join BBA Performing Arts for a night of original work created by Burr and Burton students.

Jim Raposa, Burr and Burton’s theater director shared a story of how the New Works Project came to be: “The project started over 12 years ago as a weekend workshop where students wrote and directed original One Acts and then worked with theater professionals rehearsing them for two days and then performing them. [Over time] that morphed into the evening that we have now. This evening of original work allows student artists a chance to create and share their original work in a workshop format.”

Mika Hansen, a performer in the New Works Project, says “I think the New Works Project is an amazing opportunity for anyone who chooses to do it. Even if you aren’t involved in theater at BBA, it’s a great chance to be able to see what it’s like to work with scripts and be on a stage in front of an audience. It is very laid back compared to other shows that BBA puts up, as you get to keep the scripts in hand. It’s also incredibly impressive to be able to see the first drafts of scripts at New Works, then get to see them staged and finished in the One Acts.”

Two pieces you will experience on Friday are “Blue on Blue” by Lily Hutcheson and “Paper Mate Pink Pearl” by Gwen McGowan. Lily Hutcheson says, “I was inspired by stories of the struggles LGBTQ people faced during World War II.” Mika Hansen, who's reading for multiple roles in the New Works Project, is most excited to read for the role of the mother in “Paper Mate Pink Pearl”.

Come out to the Riley Center Friday night and enjoy incredible student produced dancing, acting, and playwriting in a positive workshop environment where you get the chance to share your own thoughts and ideas.
