Girls Ultimate Makes BBA History

Spring is here! The sun is shining, the flowers are budding, and new spring sports are emerging. The Ultimate team (originally known as Ultimate Frisbee) has finally split from a co-ed team to a girls and boys varsity team. The head coach of the girls Ultimate team, Nixi Cura, is so excited for this new chapter.

Nixi Cura has a history of bringing Ultimate to new places. From her college, where she started an intramural team in 1984, to international tournaments with countries all throughout Asia, and now here in Manchester, Vermont. Coach Cura loves the “hippie roots” and the “easy-going, laid back environment” of Ultimate. Her goals for this season are simple: “Have fun, get a great group vibe going, and meet new friends along the way. I want the team to be proud to be the first girls team in Southern Vermont.”

Charlotte Duffy ‘23, an athlete who's been on both the co-ed team and the new girls team says she's looking forward to “[Having] more confidence. Co-ed team can be hard with girls and boys; I never feel good enough-- I'm not as fast or as strong as the boys. With a girls team, it provides more comfort; it evens out the playing field. [Having a girl’s team] makes it less intimidating for freshmen and sophomores to join an all girl’s team rather than a co-ed team.”

Rorie Mara ‘23, is brand new to Ultimate coming from track. As a senior she's never played a team sport, only individual sports. Being a team sport was a big motivation for her to join. She says, “It's a different type of atmosphere; everyones has each other's backs and we work together to achieve great plays.” Her older sister, Casey Mara ‘19, was the first girl to play when Ultimate was just a club. Now, Rorie gets to be a part of the first girls varsity Ultimate team in southern Vermont. She wants to build a strong foundation now so in future the team is a safe and fun environment.

The girls varsity Ultimate team has their first scrimmage at South Burlington this Saturday and their first game is April 7th in Burlington.
