Led by Close Up Program Instructors, students learn about history and government while considering a variety of viewpoints. Close Up is designed to inspire and empower students to become active participants in their democracy. Student cost: $1900.00

Martinique –– April break 2023
Michelle Emery and Nora Hefner
French and Food/Farm Studies students have priority, no language restriction (but knowledge of French is best because many residents don’t speak much English), but must be in good academic/disciplinary standing. A spirit of adventure is a must! This trip is planned through Students Love Travel and is a custom itinerary. The trip includes exploration of the island, learning about its rich history from the native peoples to colonialization and slavery to modern times. Located in the Caribbean (but a part of France), Martinique has a volcano, lovely beaches, rich biodiversity, and amazing food. We will visit places like the Jardins de Balata botanical garden, the Savane des Esclaves living history park to learn about slavery, and the plantation where Empress Euginie Napoleon grew up. We will snorkel and sail, hoping to see tropical fish, sea turtles, dolphins, flying fish, and iguanas. This will be a private tour for 12-15 students. Cost will be between $3200-$3500/student, TBD. Price includes transportation, lodging, 2 meals/day (lunch is on our own), plus all activities, guides, tips, and insurance.

Costa Rica –– Sea Turtle Ecology April Break April 14- 22nd
Rebecca Allen (rallen@burrburton.org)

Priority for this Science Department Research Trip will be given to upperclassmen and students who have taken Biology and maintained an A (General Level) and B (CP or Honors Bio).

This trip is planned with Ecology Project International and the Pacuare Sea Turtle Reserve. Students will travel into San Jose Costa Rica and travel to the research station at Pacuare- a remote island research station accessible only by boat.  While there, students will be working in small teams with the researchers to collect data on the Leatherback Sea Turtles which come onto the Caribbean side of Costa Rica to nest. This unique opportunity gets you working with the turtles. It is exhausting work as you will be hiking for 3 miles on the beach in the middle of the night rain or shine. During the day, students will engage in explorations of the rainforest as well as do their own mini research project. After three days on station, we will then travel to live and work at the Tirimbina research station. Students will get to hike through the rainforest and  learn about the unique ecosystems of Costa Rica. There will be tons of wildlife to view as Costa Rica is one of the Biodiversity hotspots on the plant. The cost will be between $3500- $3800. This would include airfare, all meals and lodging, research permits, travel in-country, and rafting or other excursions. Minimum of six students, maximum of 18.  Students must complete the application and meet the other requirements.
