BBA star quarterback Joey McCoy has been selected the Vermont high school football player of the year

This story by ALEX ABRAMI as it appeared in the Burlington Free Press:

The senior is the third Bulldog to receive the honor, which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence as well as high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, according to a news release.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound McCoy powered BBA to a 10-1 record and the Division I state championship in the program's first season in the state's top division.

McCoy threw for 3,086 yards and 42 touchdowns while adding 844 yards and 14 more scores on the ground in BBA's high-scoring offense. He threw for 16 TD passes in three playoff games as BBA captured the second of back-to-back state crowns (the Manchester school won the D-II title in 2018).

McCoy was also a standout on defense, racking up 100 tackles and picking off four passes from the safety position.
“Joey is a dual threat, and can run and throw with the best, which made him almost impossible to defend,” Mount Anthony coach Chad Gordon said in a statement “What makes him even better is he doesn’t make mistakes. He is accurate, makes the right reads and elevates the play of the team around him.”

McCoy has maintained a weighted grade-point average of 4.74. He also launched BBA's Unified Partners program, supporting athletes with intellectual challenges, and serves as a coach for BBA’s Unified basketball team. He has volunteered locally as part of a fundraising campaign to benefit cancer research, and has donated his time at a homeless shelter and food bank.

McCoy remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.

As a part of Gatorade’s cause marketing platform “Play it Forward,” McCoy has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of his choosing, the news release said.
