Vermont Data Science Kicks Off at the MC!

In our first week of Vermont Data Science, we officially launched a semester-long longitudinal study centered on the Kelley Cabin loop trail. To capture the shifting environmental dynamics of the Green Mountains, we established ten distinct checkpoints where students will consistently collect data on temperature, wind speed, snow depth, animal tracks, trail condition and canopy coverage. This fieldwork serves as the foundation for our exploration into the "living laboratory" of our campus, allowing us to track how these variables interact and change as we move through the winter and into the spring.
As we begin processing this initial data, we focused on three primary visualization techniques this week: the dot plot, the histogram, and the box-and-whisker plot. Throughout the semester, students will revisit these methods (along with others) and critically decide which visualization is most appropriate for the specific story they wish to tell, whether they are analyzing a single day's fluctuations or the season's cumulative trends.

On Thursday, we deepened our understanding of the local ecosystem by conducting a hands-on investigation of various Vermont wildlife skulls and furs. This session allowed students to practice the foundational skill of scientific observation and developing testable questions.
