Target Class Visits Bear Dens

What does a black bear’s winter habitat actually look like from the inside? Students in our 'Vermont Ecology and Conservation' course recently found out.
On Tuesday, students in Target Campus’ “Vermont Ecology and Conservation” course had the ultimate privilege of joining a Vermont Bear Biologist near Okemo National Forest to visit two bear den sites. During the field visit, students crawled into the dens to see firsthand where bears spend the winter in torpor. Unlike true hibernation, torpor involves only a minimal drop in body temperature, leaving bears able to wake up throughout the winter season. The class learned all about the purpose behind winter den surveys and bear life cycles, including how cubs den with their mother for two consecutive winters before striking out on their own.

A huge thank you to Nicole for sharing her research with us and to the landowner who generously welcomed our group onto his property.
