BBA Unified Basketball headed to Special Olympics

The Burr and Burton Unified basketball team has been selected to represent Vermont at the Special Olympics, which are being hosted at the University of Minnesota from June 20 to June 26.
This is the first time BBA has been selected to represent Vermont. They have made it to the State Championship three out of the last four years, making them more than a valid candidate.

The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and fans from home can watch it on ESPN and Disney Channel. There will be around 4,000 athletes honored over the three-hour ceremony. They will be joined by an estimated 1,500 coaches, 10,000 volunteers, and 75,000 fans.

The Special Olympics hosts more than just basketball, there will be sports like flag football, soccer, golf, softball, and more. The Special Olympics organization promotes inclusion, with the primary goal of combatting discrimination. The organization estimates that approximately 6.5 million people in the United States have intellectual disabilities, and about 200 million globally. Their ultimate aim stated on their website is that people with intellectual disabilities are no longer subjected to injustice, exclusion, and discrimination.

The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will unite 3,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches, and 10,000 volunteers, with an estimated 75,000 fans in attendance from all 50 states.

Leading up to the Special Olympics, the Bulldogs had a successful 2026 season, going 8-1, and would practice three times a week.
