Signs of spring in Farm and Food Studies

Farm and Food Studies students in Ethnobotany, Sustainable Agriculture, and a Farm Skills Internship are embracing March on the Farm!
Farm and Food Studies students have been hard at work all winter, but our recent burst of spring weather brought fresh energy to the farm. Here is some of what early spring on the farm looks like:

Maple Sugaring
Ethnobotany students tapped 16 sugar maple trees near the Farm and Food Studies classroom upon returning from February break. They have gathered around 70 gallons of sap so far and boiled half of it on the way to becoming maple syrup. On Tuesday, these students led a group of JISP participants from Floodbrook, Dorset, and Sunderland schools, on a sap-gathering quest. Students of all ages enjoyed the sunshine and a taste of sweet sap being boiled. Keep an eye out for our small evaporator making its annual visit to the Founders Hall patio in the coming weeks!

Starting Seeds and Preparing to Grow
This spring, BBA Farm Intern Siena has been helping to start perennial herb and flower seeds for the BBA garden and for Hildene. She has also grown microgreens for the cafeteria and dorm kitchens, and helped to keep the winter greenhouse crops watered and happy.

Sustainable Agriculture students have begun starting vegetable seeds for their collaboration with Someday Farm in East Dorset. On Wednesday, they planted 2400 onion seeds with the visiting farmers. These students will start thousands more seeds with Someday Farm and for the BBA garden over the next two months!

Students are looking forward to more time out in the garden, greenhouse, and forest trails in the warmer weather that spring will bring!
