Congratulations, Amos, on qualifying as a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

The National Merit Scholarship program is very competitive; of 1.5 million entries, only approximately 15,000 students are finalists.  What inspired you to work to this level of academic achievement?

Smithwick: My family is full of teachers and former teachers. We have a very strong academic culture in my house. My parents have always encouraged me to do the very best that I am capable of doing when it comes to school.

What do you think prepared you for this achievement?

Smithwick: I think it was a combination of being a student at BBA as well as my own pursuits that helped me succeed. I became a much better student and learned a lot throughout my four years here, and my college counselor Ms. Michaud has been awesome at helping through the process of applying to scholarships and colleges. However, a piece of it comes from internal motivation, which really has to do with all aspects of your life, and I was fortunate enough to have a strong base at school and at home.

And finally (since you currently curate the playlist in Founders Hall), what's your favorite song ever?

Smithwick:  It's too hard to pick a favorite, but I'll give one of my favorite albums: Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. It's full of really beautiful harmonies and lush instrumentation which I heavily enjoy.
