The Bullhorn: September 2022

 Thursday, September 1, 2022

From the Headmaster

Dear Families:

The new school year has launched. On
Monday morning, we welcomed 775 students into the EH Henry gymnasium:
179 ninth graders, 189 10th graders, 200 juniors, and 207 seniors. This group includes 33 transfer students into 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, 32 international students from 12 different countries, and local students from our 13 sending towns and beyond. All are now Bulldogs, and over the next weeks and months, we will grow together as a community.

Opportunities
Burr and Burton Academy is a place of opportunity, and along with our myriad programs in academics, athletics and the arts, I want to spotlight two programs that bring students off of the main campus for unique learning experiences:
  • The Mountain Campus is a semester program located in Peru, Vermont. Based in a LEED Platinum certified building surrounded by thousands of acres of national forest, this program immerses students in the natural world. Please click here for a recent article in The View describing this program and its impact on students, and please consider coming to Localfest, a celebration of 10 years at the Mountain Campus on Saturday, September 17. Click here for details.
  • Farm and Food Studies is located at the Hildene Farm On River Road in Manchester. This program offers students the opportunity to work with their hands as well as their hearts and minds learning farming, ethnobotany and more. Please click here to see a student written article from a recent issue of The View profiling Director Nora Hefner.

Invitation: September 30, 6:00 to 8:00 PM
The Parent Association hosts gatherings each month, and the first one will be at my house, Birchbrook, located on campus at 310 Williams St. in Manchester. Drive all the way up the driveway and you’ll see a big red house at the end. I hope many of you come over to get to know each other in a casual, friendly setting.

Core Value: Community
We know that a supportive and caring community brings out the best in us all. I hope your experience as parents and guardians, and I especially hope that your student’s experience, is one of developing a deep sense of belonging in this very special community.

Welcome to the 2022–23 school year. We are off to a good start.

Sincerely,
Mark H. Tashjian

BULLDOGS RISE

From the Associate Head of School

Dear BBA Community:

As a school we believe in the transformative power of travel, and this year BBA teachers are offering a range of trips. Trips extend and enrich learning by offering immersive experiences in language, culture, curriculum, adventure and service. We know that these experiences are life changing and we know that travel is expensive. BBA is fortunate to offer support to students through the Rowland Student Life and Learning Fund established by Wendy and Barry Rowland. The fund has supported over 600 students in the last 10 years. Up to $60,000 a year is granted based on family need and the quality of student application essays. We ask that everyone pay something toward trips, but the travel grants make the trips affordable for all -- regardless of a family’s financial situation.

Read below for more detail on this year’s trips and feel free to reach out to trip leaders if you have questions. The Rowland Student Life and Learning application is available on the Resource Board (OnCampus) and it is linked below. Applications are due on October 2nd and award decisions will be made by October 17th.

Please see the announcement below for details about all the incredible travel opportunities offered this school year.

Thank you,

Meg Kenny
Associate Head of School

From the Health Center

On behalf of the Burr and Burton Health Center, welcome back and a special WELCOME to new families. It is with great hope and optimism that we jump into the 2022-23 school year. The start to this school year feels, dare we say, almost normal and it is our hope that students will experience it that way as well.

Ecuador Exchange Returns for 2022-23

After being put on hold due to Covid 19, the exchange between Burr and Burton Academy and Unidad Educativa Santana, BBA's sister school in Cuenca, Ecuador, is back on for the 2022-23 school year! On September 9, fourteen students from Santana will arrive to begin their three week immersion into the United States.

Welcome Back! We have a lot planned for you.

The School Counseling team extends a big welcome back to our returning Bulldogs and a warm welcome to the newest members of our community. We look forward to working with you and your families throughout the academic year as you plan your schedules, experience new classes, explore career paths, and navigate the college search and application process. There are many events coming up in the next few weeks and months, so click through to learn more about the resources and events available to students and parents.

From the Athletic Department

Competitions for Fall sports begin this week. The athletes and coaches have been hard at work for a while and I am excited to see them compete. Homecoming Weekend is coming up September 23rd & 24th. This month I share our sportsmanship aspirations. As we gear up for the start of the sports season, please take a moment to reacquaint yourself with the SuperFan Seven. We take our athletic classrooms very seriously at Burr and Burton - it’s how we do things here.

Bulldog Leadership Summit - Coming up!

We are excited about our 7th annual, student-led retreat on Sunday, September 11th. The goal of the Bulldog Leadership Summit is to create a community of student leaders who use their influence as leaders to transform the culture of Burr and Burton so that integrity, selflessness, and respect for everybody is embraced. We aim to inspire students to lead through character, accountability, and adding value to others.
